A very modest crop from my lemon cucumber plant, although there may well be more on the way.
The lemon in the name refers to the colour and rough size/shape, rather than taste.
I first thought I would need to peel these – as you can probably see, the skin has lots of little spines. However, I found these rubbed off easily.
But then I found that the skin was much tougher than normal cucumber and not particularly pleasant. So I ended up peeling the two quarters I ate, after all. Easy to peel with a veg peeler.
The flesh is crisp and quite refreshing. I’d definitely grown them again, although I’d wish for a better crop.
